The Driver CPC (Certificate of Professional Competence) is a qualification required for all professional lorry, bus, and coach drivers. It ensures drivers have the necessary skills, knowledge, and training to operate vehicles safely and efficiently.
Driver CPC has been updated from December 2024, introducing more flexible rules tailored to drivers operating exclusively within the UK.
While the qualification remains mandatory, upcoming changes aim to simplify compliance and reduce administrative burdens. This article outlines the key updates to help you navigate them with ease.
International vs. National Driver CPC - The Key Differences
The Driver CPC system is adapting to better suit the diverse needs of professional drivers.
Here’s a breakdown of the updates:
International Driver CPC
The International Driver CPC will continue to meet the standards required for drivers operating across the UK and the EU. Key details include:
- Renewal Requirements - Drivers must renew their qualifications every five years by completing 35 hours of periodic training.
- Training Format - Each training session will last seven hours, with split-day courses requiring completion over two consecutive days.
- Driving Scope - This qualification allows professional driving both within the UK and EU.
National Driver CPC
A new National Driver CPC is being introduced for those operating exclusively within the UK. This qualification offers greater flexibility:
- Renewal Cycle - Like the International CPC, it requires 35 hours of training every five years.
- Training Flexibility - Courses can include a mix of National and International CPC sessions.
- Session Duration - Each session must last at least 3.5 hours and can be extended to suit drivers’ schedules.
- Split-Day Courses - Unlike the International CPC, split-day courses do not need to be completed consecutively.
Shared Benefits of Both Qualifications
Both International and National Driver CPCs provide:
- E-Learning Opportunities - Up to 12 hours of e-learning can count toward the 35-hour training requirement, offering added flexibility for busy professionals.
Automatic Qualification for International Driver CPC
Currently, passing the qualifying tests grants drivers an International Driver CPC valid for five years, enabling professional driving across the UK and EU.
Changes Effective February 2025
From February 2025, drivers whose CPC qualifications have expired between 60 days and two years will have additional options to regain their status. These updates are designed to accommodate the varying needs of UK-based professionals while ensuring industry compliance.

Option 3 - ‘Return to Driving’ Module with International Training

What You Need to Know About Driver CPC Cards & Updated Card Types
- International Driver CPC Card - The International Driver CPC card remains unchanged in both design and functionality. It is valid across the UK and Europe, allowing professional drivers to operate vehicles internationally. This card indicates that the holder has met the necessary training requirements to drive professionally within the European Union and other countries where the Driver CPC is recognised.
- National Driver CPC Card - The National Driver CPC card, on the other hand, is specifically designed for UK-based driving only. It includes the text “DOMESTIC UK USE ONLY,” which clearly indicates that the cardholder is authoriSed to drive commercially within the UK, but not for international journeys. This type of card was introduced in response to changes in regulations following Brexit, ensuring that drivers who only operate within the UK are in compliance with local requirements.
Both card types serve as proof of the driver's professional competence, and it is important for drivers to ensure they hold the correct card for the scope of their operations.
Carrying Your CPC Card
All drivers must carry their CPC card while driving professionally. Non-compliance can result in fines of up to £1,000.
Beyond the financial penalties, not having your CPC card on hand can cause delays, disrupt operations, and damage your professional reputation.
To avoid these issues, drivers should ensure their CPC card is valid, up-to-date, and always accessible during their shifts.
Dual Qualifications
Drivers qualifying for both National and International CPCs can hold separate cards, depending on vehicle type and operating region. For example:
- International CPC - For HGVs driving across the UK and EU.
- National CPC -For buses or coaches restricted to UK operations.
Penalties for Non-Compliance
Failing to carry a valid CPC card during professional driving can lead to fines of up to £1,000. This applies universally to all lorry, bus, and coach drivers.
The CPC card serves as proof that the driver has undergone the necessary training and meets the professional standards mandated by law. Without it, drivers are not only at risk of financial penalties but may also face restrictions on their ability to continue operating vehicles professionally. Always ensure your CPC card is valid and readily accessible to avoid complications on the road.
